2009 another year of foggy challenges

Lost in the fog!? ... sorry folks, I've been a little "lost in the fog" this summer to get to post on the blog.

It has been another foggy summer - this can't be "coincidence" any more, it must be "climate change" (?)

But we've had some awfully great ... and some very "LUCKY" trips (too). Some people want to try regardless of the conditions ... who are WE to say "no"!? ... Of course we would never take a "chance" on SAFETY.

When it is foggy and not too windy, we have an excellent chance of hearing the whales blowing (breathing), sometimes miles away. We work together with our colleagues and try to spread out our "effort", and "share" the whale(s) when found. But when it is windy (too) it is hard to hear them, especially with the boats bouncing up and down in the waves and/or slapping water all around the boat (making alot of noise). Sometimes it is just simply "being at the right place at the right time" .. but if you don't go, how can you be? ... "you can't win (the lottery) if you don't buy a ticket!"

Many, many people still want to try, regardless of the conditions and the big difference between US and the "other fellas" is that sooo many people say "it is worth it just for the zodiac ride!" ... there is a HUGE difference between the adventure and FUN ride out in the zodiac vs plowing around in a fishing boat with kids running around impatient, babies crying etc etc.

We've pulled a couple rabbits out of the hat with MOST boats canceling because of the conditions and we still saw whales. Once 3 humpbacks close to shore and last night we were "lucky" enough to find a juvenile humpback flipper slapping and breaching (over and over again). ... That's how we found it! ... Zodiac 2 captain Richie heard "slap ... slap ... slap" in the distance. We worked over in that direction and eventuallyl found the humpback flipper slapping ... it also started to breach over and over. watch for video to be posted on you-tube later this year.

Fog, fog and lots more fog! ... It sure has been a foggy summer! It has been driving me CRAZY!! (Tom - the owner and head guide) ... the fog broke for a couple days and we had some fantastic "events" ... There were A LOT of whales this week! ... Fin, humpback and Minkes. .

yeahhhh! ... we have often thought that Digby should have a hostel, but it takes real "passion" and committment to run one. I have travelled A LOT in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Caribbean etc. utilizing hostels (when i was a bachelor!, but my wife says she's willing to try a "private room" at a hostel some time). I actually used to have a hostel ... sort of! I did Bed & Breakfast at my place for 10 years when I started in 1986 and I offered hostel rates to hostelers passing through.

Fog cleared! Humpbacks are HERE!!

Well Folks, the wind came around west and northwest and (finally) blew the fog out!

What a great surprise, there are a number of whales out there, including fin, humpback and Minke.

This particular humpback played around the seaward for a while and then just kept on spyhopping (sticking it's head up out of the water) and swimming around us. The people were quite excited. Here's a couple of short video clips from my digital camera.

Whales and Fog! July Whale-watching!

Lots of fog! ... and how many whales?

Who knows!!?? .... because there has been so much fog in late June and early July, it has been very difficult for us to know how many whales are out there!

We have been seeing mostly fin and Minke whales, but yesterday we came across two humpbacks!

When it is foggy like this, the various companies usually spread out our efforts to cover as much different territory as possible. ... and then share the info, increasing the chances for all guests on all boats to see whales. ... WE were the lucky ones to be at the right place at the right time and came across these two large humpbacks.

Our guests (mostly from Ontario and Alberta) were pretty happy! ... and glad they "took the chance, in challenging conditions". ... as one couple put it, ... "we knew it would be worth it just for the ride!" ... BONUS (the whales)!
